Oxfam is a UK initiative that firmly believes a resource-rich world does not deserve poverty anywhere. The charity is dedicated to responding to global emergencies from poverty to natural disasters. The charity creates logistical and physical efforts to deliver the essentials any human being deserves as stated by the United Nations: food, water, shelter, clothing, and communication to the outside.
Oxfam has participated in several key economic, wartime, and disaster-ridden spots in the world including the famine in Yemen, the Rohingya Bangladesh Crisis, and the ongoing Syrian Civil War. By publishing the stories of people affected by the appalling events, the charity raises awareness and funding for its efforts worldwide.
Mission / Vision
Oxfam was founded in 1942 and opened its first charity shop the same year. It had 23,000 volunteers and 650 charity shops dedicated to funding efforts to save the world from poverty and humanitarian crises in 1948.
Oxfam has built its influence in schools and successfully managing several life-giving projects in the following years. Despite its successes, Oxfam has never ceased to make efforts to raise funds from selling charity products to power itself towards its goal of making the world a better place by providing humanitarian aid to those who need it and reducing poverty.
Roles and Contributions
For Oxfam, poverty is more than the direct effects of economic breakdowns in different parts of the world. The charity makes it a goal to try and prevent problems before they establish themselves into disasters. Its “Even it Up” campaign brought awareness towards the immense tax dodging and unfair strategies that allow multinational businesses and established brands and personalities to avoid their fiscal responsibilities that aid international governments’ anti-poverty efforts.
Environmental issues including global warming is also a big concern for the charity organisation. In the last few years, it had participated in observing the high-level discussions during the Paris UN Climate Summit in 2015. It had also pushed the decrease of coal power dependence worldwide through an international petition.
Oxfam fights against the injustices faced by people who do not have the means and resources to deal with and resolve them.
