The Tibetan Education & Relief Association is made up of a small group of volunteers in the UK: (Chrissie/Director, David/Newsletter Editor, Johanna/Treasurer & IT Fundraiser, Lynn/Secretary, Mark/Sponsorship Secretary, Carole/Executive Member. Plus Lhakpa/Child Welfare Representative in Nepal, Lama Thapchok/Co-ordinator in India, Sydney Leijenhorst/Co-ordinator in the Netherlands, and Togden Achoue/our Spiritual Inspiration in India.
The Tibetan Education & Relief Association has long-standing projects in Himalayan communities of Tibet, India, and Nepal, where we provide pooled-sponsorship for children’s education, and the health and welfare of impoverished people from multi-ethnic backgrounds. In a highly-restricted remote area of Tibet we support a health clinic, and have also funded the building of a school where we provide sponsorship to help children with their schooling up to the age of 13. Overall, we help over 70 nomadic Tibetan Drokpa families.
In Nepal we currently sponsor the education, health and welfare of 13 impoverished Nepalese Tamang, Nawari, and Sherpa children. The children also receive extra-curricular English lessons from a top Nepali teacher, who gives her time freely so that they may achieve a high standard of English education for a better start in life.
In India, we sponsor the necessary school equipment and uniforms of twelve Indian children (one each from twelve families), which enables their education at Indian State School. Their mothers (sometimes with up to five children, living in one room) have either been abandoned or left unsupported due to severe family health issues.
Your donations achieve a great deal: a child from an impoverished background from Nepal, India or Tibet could enjoy the privilege of schooling which would help them to get their feet on the ladder of opportunities for further education and potential employment. £15 goes a long way! - a Class VIII child in Nepal can have his/her monthly tuition fee + computer/internet lessons + quarterly exam sponsored for only £15.90! This is extremely good value for money, and enables a child to not only have his/her own long-term prospects raised, but those of his/her family too.
